Judge Herbert Exarhos is one of the San Diego Superior Court’s most experienced jurists. Appointed to the bench in 1983 as a Municipal Court Judge and then as a Superior Court Judge in 1987, he has served in a variety of roles for the court. His assignments have included acting as Supervising Judge of both the Criminal Division and the East County Division. He has also helped guide one of California’s largest court systems as a member of the San Diego Superior Court Executive Committee for more than 15 years.
Before taking the bench, Judge Exarhos was a Certified Family Law Specialist in practice for himself, and an Associate Attorney at Milch, Wolfsheimer & Wagner. He also worked for the City of San Diego as a Deputy City Attorney.
Judge Exarhos is a Vietnam veteran of the United States Army, where he was a private in the infantry and a Captain in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Four Campaign Stars, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
Judge Exarhos earned a B.S. from California Western University and a J.D. from California Western University School of Law. He was admitted to the California Bar and the United States Court of Military Appeals.
When not on the bench, Judge Exarhos is a member of the Patriot Guard Riders, a non-profit organization which ensures dignity and respect at memorial services honoring fallen military heroes, first responders and honorably discharged veterans. He is also a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
